Substation Digital Control System

Substation Digital Control System

The Design and Analysis of a Substation Digital Control System is necessary for the process of automatic activities at the electrical substation control system to secure the life of the Engineers

This article sufficiently explains a substation digital control system whose purpose was to build a prototype of a digitized substation control system operated by a remote controller and using Arduino.

The project was designed to remotely switch on the loads one at a time until an excess load is detected after which it is commanded to go off by itself in order to protect the distribution transformer from overload.

Transformer overload is the most frequent cause of transformer failure and can sometimes lead to explosions as it causes the transformer to overheat. After overheating, the insulation of the transformer windings is damaged creating a short circuit, which eventually makes the transformer fail or eventually explode.

The aim was to automatically limit the number of loads connected to the transformer depending on the transformer rating and at the same time avoid direct contact with any of the substation equipment by using a remote controller to avoid electric shock. Consequently,

This report details the development of the system’s decision-making mechanism and also mentions project management. The project’s decision-making aspect is the main aspect of the system as it is automatic and does not require any physical operation.

Substation Digital Control System FAQ

How does Scada work in a substation?

Substation Control using SCADA: The SCADA system continuously monitors the status of various equipment in substations and accordingly sends control signals to the remote control types of equipment. Also, it collects the historical data of the substation and generates alarms in the event of electrical accidents or faults.

What is the need for substation automation?

Substation automation helps in increased performance and reliability of electrical protection, advanced disturbance, and event recording capabilities, aiding in detailed electrical fault analysis, display of real-time substation information in a control center, remote switching, and advanced supervisory control.

What is the monitoring equipment used in a substation?

The substation equipment monitoring system described in this paper meets the requirements of maintenance engineering teams by monitoring substation equipment, such as power transformers, circuit breakers, dc battery systems, and disconnect switches.

What is the equipment used in the substation?

Distribution Transformer. Circuit breaker. Lightning Arrester. Air Brake (AB) switches / Isolator.

What is the SAS system in the substation?

Substation Automation System (SAS) provides protection, control, automation, monitoring, and communication capabilities as a part of comprehensive substation control and monitoring solution.

What is a substation control system?

The substation control system is the complete system by which all the events, measurements operation, and control of the substation are achieved from the local PC as well as the Remote control center. The following are the main application of the SCS. Setting the Relay from the Local PC as well as the Remote Control center.

How does a digital substation work?

Introduction. The Digital Substation is a term applied to electrical substations where operation is managed between distributed intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) interconnected by communications networks
